String Theory High School
String Theory High School is a tuition-free, Philadelphia public charter school open to all Philadelphia residents.
String Theory High School is accepting applicants for 9th and 10th grades for the 2014-2015 school year. We provide a rigorous 21st-century curriculum, featuring an outstanding arts program, that prepares students for their future beyond their academic careers.

As Head of School, it is my sincere pleasure to welcome current and prospective families to the new, exciting, and innovative String Theory High School. Our staff has the dedication, drive, and determination to provide our fortunate students with the most creative experience in the teaching and learning process. We cultivate the collaboration with our families and students in striving to create the most positive school culture. Communication from the school to home, as well as from the home to school, is the most imperative ingredient that will assure academic, social, and artistic success for ALL of our students.
The subject area and curriculum at String Theory High School is exciting and rigorous and satisfies all of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania requirements for high school graduation. Throughout this intense four-year program, students will complete the necessary classes for graduation in the following subject areas: English, Math, Science, History, Arts and Humanities, Foreign Language, Physical Education, and Health. In addition students will complete the robust coursework required for their Major. The exciting Major choices include:The curriculum is organized into the following majors:
- Digital Design & Communication Arts
- Innovations in Science & Technology
- Instrumental Music
- Theatre, Television & Broadcast Arts
- Vocal Music
As the students progress, they will complete a Junior Interdisciplinary Seminar and Senior Capstone Project.
A Note from Regina Cocozza Craig, Director of Curriculum for String Theory Schools
The curriculum at String Theory High School is rigorous and robust, with the overriding focus geared to preparing students for their future in the 21st century. Our program is grounded in the Common Core Standards for Math, Social Studies, and English, the Next Generation Standards for Science, and the National Educational Technology Standards. In addition to the outstanding courses, the Majors programs are unparalleled in a performing arts environment.
Students are challenged to learn in an inquiry-based environment with teachers who understand the need for critical thinkers. Real world problems are discussed, and students work together toward viable solutions. Teachers work together to create unique courses they publish through iTunes University, making them leaders in their fields. Goodbye textbook; hello iTunes U!
A typical ninth grader's school day consists of five academic classes, one extended majors class, one thirty minute lunch, and one thirty minute mentoring period. High school freshmen take the following courses: Genres in English Literature, Algebra or Geometry, Biology, World History, and French as part of their core academic program. Each student chooses a major, and two periods per day are devoted to the pursuit of content and practices in that major. For the 2013-2014 school year, majors are dedicated to the following areas: Ballet, Digital Design & Communication Arts, Innovations in Science & Technology, Instrumental Music, Theatre, Television & Broadcast Arts, and Vocal Music.
Students in tenth grade will take the following courses: Geometry, English Literature, American History, Chemistry, and French I or II. Majors will remain the same.
String Theory High School athletic teams are members of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, Inc. (PIAA).
Our current sports program includes girls volleyball, girls and boys swimming, girls and boys basketball, baseball, and softball.
Location1600 Vine Street, at the center of Philadelphia's museum hub and the business and government districts, and surrounded by the most acclaimed schools in the city.
TransportationStudents who live a sufficient distance (determined by the School District of Philadelphia) from the school receive weekly SEPTA Transpasses. There is no bus service for the High School.
School DayThe school day runs from 7:45 am to 3:30 pm and consists of 8 periods, made up of 5 academic periods, 2 Majors periods and a Mentoring/Lunch period.
